What is Athletic Therapy?
In Canada, an Athletic Therapist is a certified member of the Canadian Athletic Therapist Association (CATA) and are referred to as a Certified Athletic Therapist (Canada) or a CAT(C). A Certified Athletic Therapist is an allied health professional who specializes in care and prevention of injuries of those who engage in an active lifestyle. Athletic Therapist will assess the injury and educate you as to the anatomy involved, provide a description of how the treatment will help, provide a home program, and use sport specific rehabilitation. They utilize therapeutic modalities, soft tissue mobilization, supportive taping and bracing procedures to promote an environment conducive to optimal healing and prepare the individual for safe reintegration into an active lifestyle. Biomechanical and gait analysis are often done in order to determine mechanism of injury and plan for treatment.
